Inti cerita
Cerita diawali dari kematian Van Kerrel, seorang juru taksir atau penilai karya seni. Kita diminta untuk membela Lawrence Myers, terduga pembunuh dari tuntutan pembunuhan Van Kerrel. Berdasarkan riwayat Van, dia tidak memiliki musuh. Namun mungkin ada satu orang yang bisa membunuh dia, yaitu Bob Davis. Bob adalah salah seorang yang membeli lukisan di pelelangan. Barang yang dibeli merupakan salah satu dari beberapa benda yang secara sengaja ditukar oleh Lawrence. Dalam hal ini, Lawrence menukar dengan lukisan palsu karena membutuhkan uang lebih untuk membiayai anak-anak yang ingin bersekolah di jurusan seni. Menurut Lawrence, Bob mungkin membunuh Van karena menganggap bahwa Van yang menukar lukisannya itu. Namun Bob sudah meninggal satu tahun yang lalu karena dia membakar rumahnya, sehingga dia dan istrinya meninggal dunia dan meninggalkan satu anak bernama Bobby Davis yang terbaring di rumah sakit. Mulai dari sinilah penelusuran dilakukan. Ditemukan bahwa sebenarnya Bob memiliki anak kembar, yang satu lagi bernama Johnny Bailey, yang adalah pengurusnya Van. Van Kerrel memiliki pengurus karena dia menderita depresi. Setelah ditelusuri lebih lanjut lagi, ternyata Johnny adalah Bobby yang terbaring di rumah sakit, sedangkan Johnny yang pengurusnya Van sebenarnya adalah Bobby. Bobby membunuh Van karena dia merasa bahwa Van yang bertanggung jawab terhadap kehancuran rumahnya.
